Job Description and Duties

The Specialty Operations Trucking unit is looking to add a dynamic, upbeat, self-motivated Senior Underwriter, to work collaboratively with the Trucking Assistant Underwriting Manager. They will perform the full range of duties necessary to effectively fulfill the workers’ compensation insurance needs of California employers and, or their insurance brokers.

In this position the underwriter will use knowledge and independent judgment to review applications for insurance coverage, reports from loss control consultants and information from other sources to evaluate risk and price workers’ compensation insurance policies for California’s employers. Underwriters will also coordinate policyholder servicing and maintenance as well as participate on special projects as assigned.  

The Trucking Team specializes in underwriting risks in four trucking Workers Compensation Insurance Bureau classification codes. These risks require thorough analysis and attention to detail. This team, comprised of both Senior Underwriters and Customer Service Representatives, underwrites both Direct and Brokered policies of all premium sizes including minimum premium accounts to the largest premiums over $500,000. The trucking industry is very robust and unique in its operations, where employment status (independent contractor vs. employee) figures prominently.

• Minimum four year’ experience in underwriting and, or workers compensation (Please review Minimum Requirements for each classification)

• Strong interpersonal skill

• An aptitude for relationship building, leadership development, and work as team member

• Exceptional customer service skills

• An analytical approach to problem solving / excellent analytical skills

• The ability to adapt to changing environments, handle multiple projects, and shifting priorities

• The desire to manage a book of business and contribute to the financial stability of the organization

New Underwriters will be expected to attend a multi-week training program either in-person or virtual

New to state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of the alternate salary range when applicable. Placement to alternate salary range may be based on education or experience identified in your state application.

Working Conditions

Selected candidate(s) hired may be required to attend in-person Onboarding at our Vacaville office with expenses for attendance paid by State Fund.

Special Requirements

The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.
